MarkPrep converts Word documents to Markdown using mammoth.js — the original implementation the Python port was based on — so headings, bold, italics, lists and tables come through cleanly. It runs in your browser: your contract, your board pack, your unreleased draft never touch a server. After conversion you get a live token count against your target model, a visible chunk plan, and JSONL export for RAG.

Format notes & gotchas

  • Legacy binary .doc isn't supported in-browser — re-save as .docx first.
  • Tables map to GFM Markdown tables; heavily merged cells may flatten. The Verify tab flags anything that looks off.
  • Tracked changes and comments are not included — only the accepted document text.

Frequently asked questions

Which Word format works?+

Modern .docx. Older .doc (binary) should be re-saved as .docx in Word or Google Docs first.

Is formatting kept?+

Headings, bold, italics, lists, links, blockquotes and tables are preserved. Complex layout (text boxes, columns) is simplified to linear Markdown.

Is my file uploaded anywhere?+

No. Conversion runs entirely in your browser tab using WebAssembly. There is no upload endpoint — open your browser's Network tab and watch: nothing leaves the page. The only labelled exceptions are fetching a public URL and optional bring-your-own-key OCR.

How much does it cost?+

Conversion and the entire AI-Ready Pack — token counts, chunking, JSONL export — are free and unlimited, because they run on your hardware. Pro ($4/mo) adds workflow features like the local MCP server, watch folders and saved profiles.

Are the token counts accurate?+

Exact for OpenAI models (GPT-4o, o-series) via their published tokenizer. For Claude and Gemini we show a labelled approximation, because those tokenizers aren't public.
